Guantanamo Prisoner David Hicks Sentenced to 7 Years
David Hicks, Australian citizen, Guantanamo torture victim, has been sentence to 7 years in prison by a military court at the facility. The vast majority of the sentence was suspended and Hicks will be allowed dto serve the remaining 9 months in his native country.
Human Rights defenders have long requested his fair treatment and supported his father and family's demands that he be sent back to Australia. His dad in particular took a prominent role in highlighting his case to the public. Mass demonstrations were held in Australia during the January '07 'Day of Action to Shut Dwon Guantanamo Prison'.
31 year old Hicks pleaded guilty to supporting terrorism. He was captured in Afghanistan in 2001 although U.S. administration officials admitted that he had probably not engaged in any fighting. He had fought with the Kosovan Liberation Army in the 90's and was a convert to Islam.
