Polish Ambassador in Iraq injured

Edward Pietrzyk, the 58 year old former Polish land forces general and current ambassador to Iraq was injured in a roadside bombing in Baghdad this morning. His Polish bodyguard was killed and two others were seriously wounded. Poland continue to maintain approximately 900 soldiers in Iraq as part of the occupying forces there while they have about 3,000 more deployed internationally in Afghanistan, Kosovo, Lebanon, the Goland Heights (Syria), Albania, other Balkan States and the Congo.

Poland joined the U.S./U.K. invasion of Iraq under the Social Democrat government of Leszek Miller (now with the populist Self-Defence party) and presidency of current Leftist leader, Aleksander Kwasniewski. Last year the latter admitted that Poland had been duped into supporting the war under false pretences and if he had known there were no WMD's he would have not supported the mission.

Polish F-16's are a pile of shite
Meanwhile, Poland's new batch of F-16's are running into all sorts of problems with two of the fleet having to make emergency landings due to avionics failures. Ideally, the pilots would have to make emergency evacuations from them and the F-16's would crash into the sea without harm to anyone - but that, I guess, is wishful thinking. Alternatively, a couple of artistic minded people could have a good go at trying to turn the new Polish swords into ploughshares and do a worldwide exhibition on disarmament.

'Newsweek Polska' report that a catastrophe was merely avoided by luck. Other serious issues which remain with the fleet is the lack of a comprehensive I.T. system to manage all the sticky details that go into maintaining weapons of death.
